FINCA and COPANT – Pan American Standards Commission, along with the Ecuadorian Service for Standardization (INEN), hosted an international meeting where a number of events were held, all related with standardization and conformity assessment and the use of internacional standards as support of public policies.
Through INEN, Ecuador coordinated this events, between September 4 – 8, 2017, at the Ministry of Transportation and Public Works in Quito.
As initial activities, on September 4 and 5 the only two regional COPANT standard developing technical committees were held, Technical Committee 151 – Electrical Engineering and Smart Networks and 152 – Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energies. The information was discussed and shared by the members of the committees, incluiding experts from each country to analize different aspects of standardization and the works being executed in the different countries, always looking for harmonize criteria and requirements.
On Wednesday, September 6, the “International IEC-FINCA-COPANT 2017 Workshop” was held, inaugurated by minister of Industries and Productivity, Eva García. Several officers from diverse public institutions participated with energy-related and certification topics, among others. At the event, international speakers from the whole American continent took part.
At the event, Ecuador Industry minister mentioned the importance of this kind of meetings, that promote the integral and sustainable progress ofthe region.
“This meeting is, certainly, an opportunity ot approach important aspects for the development of the electrotechnical and energy efficiency sector. At this point, it’s meaningful to point out that his year, Ecuador will incluide a draft standard about Induction Cooker, which was reviewed within Technical Comittee 152. The aim is to technically contribute to a regional standard, with a national standard”, pointed out minister Eva García.
Meanwhile, executive director of INEN, Eng. César Díaz, highlighted the importance of technical work in standardization: “Our mission as INEN will be based on the contribution and construction of public policies that will favour its development and of all sectors from our society, Eng. Díaz said.
On September 7 and 8, the annual FINCA was held, National Commitees of IEC of the Americas, with the participation of IEC full members: Argentina, Brasil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, United States and Mexico; and IEC affiliate countres, such as Bolivia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Saint Kits and Nevis, Paraguay, Uruguay y Perú.
The event allowed for stronger relationships between participant countries, raise awareness about the industry, academia and individual relacionated with the activity, about the use of the standard, which fosters national products to be competitive and to be able enter world market.
For Ecuador, it was an opportunity to have international experts, and to allow the national industry to get to know the work carried out along with standardization international entities, and how working with standards drives the introduction of its products in the international markets.
